Note: The steps to install the 2016 or 2013 versions of Office Professional Plus, Office Standard, or a stand-alone app such as Word or Project might be different if you got Office through one of the following: Microsoft HUP: If you bought Office for personal use through your company, see Install Office through HUP. Zotero is a powerful, easy-to-use research tool that helps you gather, organize, and analyze sources and then share the results of your research. Before doing that, however, try retarting your computer and reinstalling the Zotero Word plugin and make sure that Word is not open. If that resolves the problem it is easier than reinstalling Word. The good news, if you are a WWU student or faculty member, is that you can download and install an up-to-date copy of Word from your Microsoft 365.
Step 1: Install Zotero
Zotero Download Mac
Zotero will run on any operating system. It requires Mozilla Firefox 3.0 or greater. Installation only takes a few seconds.
To install, go to http://www.zotero.org/ and click the red 'Download' button. Click 'Install Now' and follow the instructions.
If you see the message “Firefox prevented this site from asking you to install software on your computer,' click 'Allow'.
Restart Firefox and you're all set! You'll see a small Zotero button at the bottom of your Firefox window.
If you have any problems, check the Zotero installation page.
Step2: Install the Word or OpenOffice Plugin
Great news! If you're running Zotero 5.0 or Zotero Standalone 4.0, the word processor plugins are bundled with Zotero and should be installed automatically for each installed word processor when you first start Zotero.
Windows Word plugin will add a tab to your Word ribbon called Zotero:
Using a Mac?
Please note these instructions from zotero.org:
The latest version of the Mac Word plugin for Zotero 2.0 is 3.0b3. The plugin is compatible with Word 2004 and 2008 and OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or newer:
Install PythonExt:
Zotero Word Extension
- Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 users should install PythonExt from zotero.org (Firefox extension, 11MB). This custom build of PythonExt fixes several issues with the official releases, including the alpha release for Firefox 3.6. For instructions on how to update PythonExt, see the troubleshooting page. Firefox 3.0 users should install PythonExt from the official site. Note that this build of PythonExt will work only with Intel Macs. Users with PowerPC Macs must upgrade to a newer version of Firefox.
- Install the Word for Mac Plugin (Firefox extension, 126KB).
Word 2008 users: The Word 2008 plugin uses the Word script menu rather than a toolbar.

[Update: Word 2016 is now supported with Zotero Standalone 4.0.27.6 and Zotero Word for Mac Integration 3.5.8 and later -SK]
Zotero For Microsoft 2016 Mac Os
- What's your issue exactly ?
https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_integration
https://www.zotero.org/support/reporting_problems - there is no integration to add citations or bibliography into the word document
- MS-Word, right ? https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation#microsoft_word
- You mean Office 2016 for Mac Preview? (http://www.macrumors.com/2015/03/05/office-mac-2016-preview/)
- Hum, actually is there a 2015 version of Office ?
- edited March 5, 2015
- You're a bit too optimistic if it was released today. I don't think there will be a Zotero plugin before its official full release.
- edited March 5, 2015
- is there anyway to copy the bibliography to clipboard though so i can copy and paste it in manually?
- Yes: https://www.zotero.org/support/creating_bibliographies
- edited March 5, 2015This probably has no chance of working, but I'll toss it out there anyway. If you're using Zotero for Firefox, install the Word for Mac plugin. Download https://github.com/zotero/zotero-word-for-mac-integration/blob/master/install/Zotero.dot?raw=true and place it in your (I'm guessing here) <App directory>/Microsoft Office 2016/Office/Startup/Word directory. Restart Word. Let us know if that magically ends up working.
Even if it does work, it could break any time in unpredictable ways, so make backups of your document and make them frequently. - I have exactly the same problem. I've read that the new office 2016 for mac wouldn't replace the old 2011 version. But thats exactly what it has done! I'm also searching for a way to bring it back to work. Also the 'old-citation-diolog' doesn't work...
- see aurimas's suggestion - if that doesn't work, I fear we won't be able to help.
- I was to fast... the old applications are still there but they have moved in an other folder. You can find them in the apllication folder>Microsoft Office 2011
But unfortunately oll my settings are set back.. - Unfortunately Microsoft's CDN is getting hammered at the moment and it may be several days before we can even download the Office 2016 preview.
- I successfully used this mirror for the download: http://miroir1.trackr.fr/office2016/OfficePreview.pkg
MD5 seems to be fine compared to this one: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1852342&page=15 - I managed to get it by routing through my VPS. (Apparently the CDN is only broken for some regions?) Filed an issue, but item 1 there is most likely beyond our control, and item 2 may be difficult.
- Word 2016 is a b-e-a-utiful update, but without Zotero integration it's useless art.
- Hi aamir__mir and everyone else. Here is an efficient solution to this problem while we wait for the zotero integration to word 2016 for mac: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EppWpv15SJ4
Hope it helps! - edited March 10, 2015See https://www.zotero.org/support/creating_bibliographies#quick_copy but note that this is not a substitute for inserting references using a Word plugin. References inserted this way will not be automatically updated if you change metadata in Zotero, insert/delete references from text, or insert references into your document that require disambiguation.
Edit: that page doesn't mention, but you can use keyboard shortcuts for quick copy Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + A (for in-text) or C (for bibliography) - edited March 10, 2015Thanks for you video! But without refresh function it's a no-go for me. I have to work with a lot of citations aka scientific working ;-)
- Using Word for Mac Preview v15.8.1 and Zotero Standalone, the add-in buttons for Zotero in Word do not show up by default. Manually pointing Word to the add-in via (Word)->Tools->Templates and Add-ins... and browsing to Zotero.dot allows the Zotero actions to show up in the list of macros, but they do not actually work. For example, running 'ZoteroInsertCitation' generates an error: 'Word could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure that Firefox is open and try again.' (Note that I'm using standalone version, not Firefox).
Any suggestions of what else to try, or estimates of how long it will take to get plugin working with new version? - See the ticket references by Simon above. This is not going to work as things are and I doubt zotero will release a working add on before word 2016 is released regularly.
- Any word on this issue?
Cutting and pasting will not cut it.
